The Future of Clean Heat Act

The Commonwealth has committed to reducing statewide greenhouse gas emissions to net zero by the year 2050. Nearly one-third of the Commonwealth’s emissions come from buildings, mostly from burning fuels for heat, cooking, and hot water. There is no path to zero emissions that includes business as usual for gas companies.

An Act Relative to the Future of Clean Heat in the Commonwealth confronts this challenge. It sets out a comprehensive strategy over the next 25 years for an efficient, cost-effective, and just transition from the current system – where buildings are heated by combusting fuels that are hazardous to health, safety, and the climate – to a system where buildings are heated and cooled with clean renewable thermal energy.
