Advanced Leak Repair: Lining

Nathan Phillips, Boston University

At the Multi-Town Gas Leaks Iniative October 5 Meeting, Nathan Phillips provided a compelling presentation on lining leaking pipes, a method which could be used to great advantage in Newton. It could effectively repair gas leaks while it reduces the risk, cost and disruption of pipe replacement as we work to retire the gas infrastructure.

Phillips advocates for this proven method as an alternative to National Grid's installation of miles of new pipes to replace "leak prone" pipes at great cost to rate/taxpayers. Not only do replacing pipes fail to reduce risk, cost and waste but it undermines the state's mandate to end our use of fossil fuels.

The Multi-Town Gas Leaks Initiative is an informal group led by representatives of HEET, Mothers Out Front, Metropolitan Area Planning Council, and several municipalities. The purpose of the initiative is to explore how towns in National Grid territory can work together to accelerate progress on reducing the risk, waste and pollution from the leaking gas pipeline infrastructure and transitioning to clean energy.
